North Furlong Lake is a beautiful lake found high up in the Ruby Mountains in Elko County, which is in the northeastern part of Nevada. It's a special kind of lake called a glacial tarn.
What is a Tarn?
A tarn is a lake that forms in a hollow area carved out by a glacier. Imagine a giant scoop of ice moving slowly across the land. When it melts, it leaves behind a bowl-shaped dip that fills with water. That's how North Furlong Lake was made! It's like a natural swimming pool left behind by ancient ice.
Where is North Furlong Lake?
This lake is located at the very top of a place called North Furlong Canyon. It sits at a high elevation of about 9,590 feet (which is about 2,920 meters) above sea level. That's really high up in the mountains! The lake covers an area of about 16 acres (or 6.5 hectares) and can be up to 20 feet (about 6 meters) deep.
Water and Nature
North Furlong Lake is super important because it's the main source of North Furlong Creek. This creek flows out of the mountains and eventually joins other streams. Together, they form a bigger river called the South Fork of the Humboldt River. So, the water from this lake travels a long way!
