What Makes North Point Park Special?
North Point Park is also known as the "Old Boy Scout Camp." This is because Boy Scouts from Southwest Michigan have used and taken care of this area for many years. Lots of Boy Scouts have done projects here to earn their Eagle Scout rank.
Boy Scout Projects at the Park
These projects have helped the park in many ways. For example, Scouts have planted hundreds of native trees. They have also worked on keeping the trails nice. Plus, they've helped stop the land from washing away (this is called erosion control).
Beautiful Scenery and Activities
North Point Park has 330 feet (100 m) of beautiful beach along Lake Michigan. It also has amazing forests on sand dunes. These dunes are very important and are called "critical dunes." There are also wetlands, which are areas where the land is wet.
The Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy helps protect this park. They make sure it stays natural and isn't built on in the future.
Exploring the Park's Trails
The park has trails that aren't marked, but they wind through a forest of maple and beech trees. These trails lead you to the top of a big sand dune. From there, you can see an amazing view of Lake Michigan.
Many people also come to the park by boat. They use the beach for fun activities in the summer. On a sunny day, you'll often see several boats anchored near the shore of North Point.
The Amazing Sand Dunes
The sand dunes at North Point Park are very special. They are made of sand that was left behind about 10,000 years ago. This happened when huge glaciers melted and dropped the sand into the Great Lakes area.
North Point is part of the biggest freshwater dune system in the world! This system stretches for 100 miles (160 km) along the southern and southeastern shores of Lake Michigan.
Why Dunes Are Important
Coastal sand dunes around the Great Lakes are unique places. They are home to more special plants, insects, and animals than any other natural area in the Great Lakes region. They are truly vital environments.
Lake Michigan and the Great Lakes
Lake Michigan and the other Great Lakes are a natural wonder. They hold more than 95% of all the freshwater in North America. They are also the largest easy-to-reach source of freshwater on Earth!
It's important to protect places like North Point Park. Less than one percent of the natural areas near the shores of Lake Michigan are still untouched.
