The North Side Historic District is a special area in Peoria, Illinois, United States. It's like a neighborhood that has been officially recognized for its important history. Most of the buildings here are homes. This district sits on a raised piece of land near the Illinois River.

The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 21, 1983. This means it's considered very important to the history of the country. Even though it's called "North Side," it's now in the southeast part of Peoria. This is because the city has grown a lot over time.

There are 213 buildings and places in the district that help make it historic. These are called "contributing properties." Some of these important places include:

  • The Scottish Rite Cathedral at 400 NE Perry Avenue.
  • Buildings that used to be high schools, like Spalding Institute and Academy of Our Lady. These are part of the Peoria Diocese.
  • The American Legion Post #2 building at 406 NE Monroe Street.
  • St. Mary's Cathedral and its offices at 607 NE Madison Street.

Exploring the District's Location

The old part of Peoria city is built on two different levels of land, like big steps. The first level, or terrace, gently slopes up from the Illinois River. It rises about 83 feet high. This first terrace can be from three-quarters of a mile to one and a half miles wide.

The second level is made up of tall cliffs, or bluffs. These bluffs rise about 75 to 100 feet above the first terrace. The North Side Historic District is found on this first, lower terrace. It is located just north of Peoria's main downtown area. This district is mostly filled with homes and residential buildings.

Understanding the District's Boundaries

The North Side Historic District has clear boundaries. It is generally surrounded by three streets in Peoria. These streets are NE Perry Street, NE Madison Street, and Fayette Street. These streets help define the edges of this important historic area.
