Northdale is found in the northwest part of Hillsborough County. It is surrounded by other communities. To the north is Cheval, and to the northeast is Lutz. Lake Magdalene is to the east, and Carrollwood is to the south. Citrus Park is to the southwest, and Keystone is to the northwest.

Two important roads help define Northdale's borders. North Dale Mabry Highway (Florida State Road 597) forms the eastern edge of the community. The Veterans Expressway (Florida State Road 589) makes up the southwest border. Northdale is about 19 miles (31 km) north-northwest of downtown Tampa.
