The northern variable pitohui (Pitohui kirhocephalus) is a fascinating bird. It lives in the tropical forests of New Guinea and some islands nearby. This bird is quite unique because it is one of the few known poisonous birds in the world!
What is a Pitohui?
The northern variable pitohui is a type of pitohui bird. Scientists group animals together based on how they are related. This bird is part of the oriole family. It was first described by scientists in 1827.
Why is it Called "Variable"?
This bird's name used to be just "variable pitohui." But in 2013, scientists learned more about these birds. They realized there were actually a few different kinds. Because of this, the original "variable pitohui" was split into three separate species. These are the northern variable pitohui, the Raja Ampat pitohui, and the southern variable pitohui.
Where Does it Live?
The northern variable pitohui makes its home in warm, wet places. Its natural habitat is in subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests. These forests are found in New Guinea and several islands close by.
A Poisonous Bird!
One of the most amazing things about the northern variable pitohui is that it's poisonous. Its skin and feathers contain a strong poison. This poison can make other animals sick if they try to eat the bird. It's a special way the bird protects itself from predators.
