Northfield Square is a large shopping mall located in Bradley, Illinois, in the United States. It's a popular spot for shopping and fun for people living in Kankakee County, including the towns of Bourbonnais, Bradley, and Kankakee. Today, the main store at the mall is Cinemark Theatres, where you can catch the latest movies! There are also four big empty spaces where other major stores used to be.
The Story of Northfield Square
Northfield Square first opened its doors on August 1, 1990. It was built at a busy intersection near Illinois Route 50 and Larry Power Road. When it first opened, some of the big stores, called "anchor stores," included Carson Pirie Scott, JCPenney, Sears, and Venture.
Over the years, like many malls, Northfield Square saw some changes. In 2018, it was announced that Sears would be closing its store at the mall. This happened as part of a bigger plan for Sears to close many stores across the country. The Sears store at Northfield Square closed on April 9, 2018.
Soon after, both Carson Pirie Scott locations at the mall also announced they would close. This was because their parent company, The Bon-Ton Stores, was going out of business. Both Carson Pirie Scott stores closed on August 29, 2018. After these closures, JCPenney was the only original anchor store left at the mall.
More changes came in 2020. JCPenney announced it would also be closing its store around October 2020. This was part of a plan for JCPenney to close many of its stores nationwide. When JCPenney closed, Northfield Square no longer had any of its original big department stores.
The mall is now looking towards the future. The local government in Bradley has even bought one of the former Carson's store buildings. This suggests there might be exciting plans for new developments and uses for the mall in the years to come!
