A Look Back at Northgate Centre
Northgate Centre first opened its doors in April 1965. Back then, it was known as Northgate Shopping Centre. One of its main stores was a big department store called Woodward's.
In 1986, the mall got a major makeover! They added a second floor and changed its name to Northwood Mall.
A company called First Capital Realty took over the mall in 1998. They started a big project to update the mall, which finished in 2002. This project brought new spots for stores like Future Shop and Safeway. It also made the Zellers store bigger and gave the second-floor food court a fresh new look. At this time, the mall's name changed again to Northgate Centre, which it's still called today.
Changes Over the Years
In 2011, Walmart announced that it would be taking over the Zellers store. The Zellers store then closed, and a new Walmart Supercentre opened in October 2012. Walmart only used the main floor of the old Zellers. The rest of the space was turned into offices and medical clinics.
Around the same time, a store called Sport Mart closed and became Ardene. Later, on March 28, 2015, the Future Shop store closed. This space then became a Marshalls store. In May 2018, the Rexall pharmacy also closed its doors.
