History of Nu-Way Weiners
How Nu-Way Started
In 1916, a Greek American immigrant named James Mallis opened a hot dog stand. He called it "Nu-Way Weiners." This was in Macon, Georgia. Nu-Way opened in the same year as Nathan's Famous hot dog stand in New York City. This makes Nu-Way one of the oldest hot dog restaurants in the United States.
Growing the Business
By 1962, there were three Nu-Way Weiner restaurants. The company grew even more by 1972. They started allowing others to open Nu-Way restaurants, which is called franchising. This brought the total to eight locations. Nu-Way became very popular. Customers loved their hot dogs with chili sauce (called "chili dogs"). They also loved hot dogs with cole slaw (called "slaw dogs"). The New York Times even called Nu-Way the "king" of slaw dogs!
A Fire and a Famous Sign
On March 13, 2015, the first Nu-Way location on Cotton Avenue was destroyed by a fire. But luckily, the famous neon sign was saved from the flames!
Nu-Way in the Spotlight
Many Food critics have praised Nu-Way. They love its real Southern American food. They also enjoy its feeling of nostalgia, which means it reminds people of good times from the past.
In November 2007, Nu-Way got a lot of attention. This happened when Oprah Winfrey visited the restaurant. She was in Macon to film an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show. She said that Nu-Way was one of her favorite things about Macon!
In 1999, Nu-Way was shown on a PBS TV special. The show was called A Hot Dog Program. It featured 20 of the best hot dog places across the United States. Nu-Way has also received praise from many other places. These include Southern Living Magazine, Gourmet Magazine, and The Travel Channel. They have also been featured on The Today Show and CNN.
In 2012, author Ed Grisamore wrote a book about the company. It is called There Is More than One Way to Spell WIENER, The Story of Nu-Way. This book tells the detailed history of Nu-Way.
Today, Nu-Way is owned and run by James G. Cacavias and Spyros N. Dermatas. They are the third generation of owners in the family.
