Nu-Way Weiners, Inc. is a chain of fast food restaurants. You can find them in the Middle Georgia area of the United States. The very first Nu-Way restaurant opened in Macon, Georgia, on February 27, 1916. It was located at 218 Cotton Avenue in downtown Macon.
Nu-Way is famous for its special hot dogs. These hot dogs are unique because they are bright red! They also serve a big breakfast menu. This includes things like egg platters, bacon and egg sandwiches, and pancakes. Nu-Way is also known for its hamburgers. They have chili-burgers, cheeseburgers, and even a big "Mega-Burger."
As of 2023, there are eight Nu-Way Weiner restaurants. They are all in the Central Georgia area. Sadly, the first location on Cotton Avenue was destroyed by a fire in March 2015. Nu-Way's slogan is "I'd Go a Long Way For a Nu-Way." This phrase is a registered trademark. The names "Mega-Burger" and "Nu-Way" are also registered trademarks.
The Story of Nu-Way
In 1916, a Greek American immigrant named James Mallis started Nu-Way Weiners. He opened it as a hot dog stand in Macon. Nu-Way is one of the oldest hot dog restaurants in the United States. It opened the same year as Nathan's Famous hot dog stand in New York City.
By 1962, there were three Nu-Way restaurants. By 1972, they had grown to eight locations. This growth included allowing others to open Nu-Way restaurants, which is called franchising. Nu-Way built a very loyal group of customers. People loved their hot dogs with chili sauce (called "chili dogs"). They also loved hot dogs with cole slaw (called "slaw dogs"). The New York Times even said Nu-Way was the "king" of slaw dogs.
On March 13, 2015, the original Cotton Avenue location caught fire. The building was destroyed. Luckily, the famous neon sign was saved from the flames.
Nu-Way's Famous Visitors and Awards
Many Food critics have praised Nu-Way. They like its real Southern American food. They also enjoy its feeling of nostalgia, which means it reminds people of good times from the past.
