The Nuestra Señora de Gracia Parish Church (which means Our Lady of Grace Church in Spanish) is a beautiful Roman Catholic church. You can find it in the town of Palomas, Badajoz, in western Spain. This church is very special. It was named a Bien de Interés Cultural (a site of cultural interest) on November 12, 2013.
The Church's Story
The Our Lady of Grace church is an amazing old building. It stands on the highest point in the town of Palomas, in Badajoz. The church is in the middle of a square. Streets like Iglesia, Jesús, Tras Iglesia, and Juan XXIII surround it.
Building Style and Age
This church was built in the 1500s. It shows a mix of two cool building styles: Gothic and Mudéjar. Gothic style often has tall arches and big windows. Mudéjar style mixes Christian and Islamic art ideas. This church was part of the Order of Santiago.
The Amazing Tower
The church's tall tower is its most famous part. It is one of the prettiest towers in the Lower Extremadura area. The tower has cool patterns made from bricks. This church, along with others nearby, is a great example of Mudéjar art in this region.
The tower was finished before the year 1550. It has a square shape and is very tall. The tower has three main parts. The bottom two parts are actually inside the church. The very bottom part is the entrance area, called the narthex. The next part up is where the choir sings.
Inside the Church
Inside the church, you can still see many interesting art pieces. There is a large main altar piece. There are also smaller altars on the sides. These altars are dedicated to different figures. Some are for the Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the Nazarene, the Immaculate Conception, Dolorosa, and Our Lady of Guadalupe.
The church stands freely in the center of its square. There is a raised area built around the south side of the church. This helps with the slope of the ground there.
