Mehmet Nuri Conker (born September 20, 1882 – died January 11, 1937) was an important Turkish politician and a brave officer. He served in both the Ottoman Army and later the Turkish Army.
Mehmet Nuri Conker was the oldest and closest friend of Mustafa Kemal (Atatürk) since childhood. He studied at the War Academy of the Ottoman Empire, which is like a military college. He retired from the army as a high-ranking officer, a Colonel.
Nuri Conker married Nedime Hanim, and they had four children: Orhan, Mahmut Cahit, Ali Necip, and Kiymet Tesal. His sister, Dürriye Hanım, married Salih Bozok.

A Brave Soldier: Military Career
Mehmet Nuri Conker fought in many important wars and battles. He served in places like Libya, Manastir, the Dardanelles, and Syria. He also played a big part in the Turkish War of Independence.
Wounds and a Special Name
During his time as a soldier, Nuri Conker was wounded twice. One time was in a place called Bolayır. The second time was during the Dardanelles campaign, at a place known as Conk Bayırı (also called Chunuk Hill).
Interestingly, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk gave Mehmet Nuri Conker his last name, "Conker," in memory of Conk Bayırı. This shows how important that battle was and how close their friendship was.
Serving His Country: Political Life
After the French forces left Adana in 1921, Mehmet Nuri Conker was made the Governor of Adana. This was after the Franco-Turkish War.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
He was later chosen to be a member of the Grand National Assembly. This is like Turkey's main parliament or governing body. He represented Kütahya from 1923 to 1927. He was also elected to the Grand National Assembly for Gaziantep in 1932 and 1935.
Nuri Conker even served as the Deputy Chairman of the Grand National Assembly during one of its sessions. He was also an Acting Chairman in 1935.
Helping Build the Turkish Army
Mehmet Nuri Conker worked closely with Mustafa Kemal Atatürk to help develop and strengthen the Turkish Army. He was awarded the Medal of Independence for his services to his country.
Nuri Conker was also a very smart person who knew several languages, including French, German, and Arabic.
