Nurlan Balgimbayev (born 20 November 1947 – died 14 October 2015) was an important politician from Kazakhstan. He served as the country's Prime Minister from 1997 to 1999. He also had a long career working with oil and gas, which are very important resources for Kazakhstan.

Early Life and Career
Nurlan Balgimbayev was born in 1947. He studied at the Kazakh Polytechnic Institute. This is a university that teaches about engineering and technology.
After finishing his studies, Nurlan started working in the oil industry. This means he worked with finding, drilling, and processing oil. From 1973 to 1986, he worked at an oil refinery. An oil refinery is a factory that turns crude oil into useful products like gasoline.
Later, he worked for the Soviet Union's oil and gas ministry. The Soviet Union was a large country that included Kazakhstan. In the early 1990s, the Soviet Union broke apart. After this, Balgimbayev went to the United States. He studied at the University of Massachusetts and gained experience at a big oil company called Chevron.
Becoming Prime Minister
Before becoming Prime Minister, Nurlan Balgimbayev held several important jobs in the Kazakh government. He was a minister or vice-minister in different departments. From 1994 to 1997, he was the Minister of Oil and Gas. This made him in charge of Kazakhstan's oil and gas resources.
From March to October 1997, he was the head of a company called KazakhOil. This company managed Kazakhstan's oil interests.
On 10 October 1997, Nurlan Balgimbayev was chosen to be the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan. He stayed in this important role until 1 October 1999. As Prime Minister, he worked to increase Kazakhstan's oil production. He wanted to boost it from 23 million tons to 170 million tons each year. He also supported selling a part of the Tengiz oilfields to Chevron.
After Being Prime Minister
After his time as Prime Minister, Balgimbayev continued to work in the oil industry. From 1999 to 2002, he was again the head of KazakhOil. Later, this company joined with another one to form KazMunayGas, which is Kazakhstan's national oil and gas company.
From 2002 to 2007, he ran his own company, the Kazakhstan Oil Investment Company. In 2007, he became an adviser to the President of Kazakhstan. He also worked as a director for a joint company between KMG and an Italian energy company called Eni.
His Passing
Nurlan Balgimbayev passed away on 14 October 2015, in Atyrau, Kazakhstan. He was 68 years old.
