The Nyctimantis galeata is a special type of frog from the Hylidae family, also known as tree frogs. This frog is found only in Brazil. It is known only from one specific area near Morro do Chapéu, in Bahia, which is in the northern part of the Espinhaço Mountains.

Its name, galeata, comes from a Latin word meaning "covered with a helmet." This is because the frog has a very strong, bony head that looks like it's wearing a helmet!

What Does This Frog Look Like?

Scientists have studied a few of these frogs. Two adult females were about 54 to 56 millimeters (about 2 inches) long from their snout to their bottom. Another frog was 47 millimeters (about 1.8 inches) long.

This frog has a strong body. Its head is flat and longer than it is wide. It has a long snout. You can clearly see its eardrum, called the tympanum, and a small fold of skin above it.

Its fingers and toes have small sticky pads, which help it climb. Its fingers do not have webbing, but its toes are partly webbed. The skin on its back is smooth.

The frog's back has a cool pattern of stripes. It has two dark-brown stripes with cream-colored dots running down its back. There's also a cream or bronze stripe in the middle of its back and another pair of stripes on its sides.

Where Does This Frog Live?

The first Nyctimantis galeata frogs found were living inside a type of bromeliad plant called Hohenbergia vertita. These plants grow on the ground and collect water.

These frogs live in an area about 1,000 meters (about 3,280 feet) above sea level. The ground there is usually shallow and sandy, with lots of rocks sticking out.

The plants in this area are a mix of different types of forests and open lands. These include caatinga (a dry forest), cerrado (a type of savanna), and campos rupestres (rocky fields).

Is This Frog in Danger?

As of early 2022, the Nyctimantis galeata has not yet been added to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This list helps track animals and plants that might be in danger of disappearing. Scientists are still learning about this unique frog.
