Early Life and Education
Núria Albó was born on July 2, 1930, in La Garriga, a town near Barcelona, Spain. When she was young, her father passed away during the Spanish Civil War. Because of the war, she couldn't go to a regular school. However, her mother made sure she and her four brothers and sisters were homeschooled. Núria loved music, and her mother helped her learn to play the piano.
Núria also loved to read. She enjoyed novels by Hans Christian Andersen and books with pictures by Spanish artist Lola Anglada and English artist Arthur Rackham. Even as a child, she tried to read books written in the Catalan language. This love for reading in Catalan also led her to start writing her own stories and poems.
Career as a Writer and Teacher
Núria Albó started studying philosophy at the University of Barcelona in 1948, but she didn't finish at that time. She later went back to school and earned a degree in education in 1962.
She won her first writing award in 1958. In 1962, she published her first collection of poems called La mà pel front. Ten years later, in 1972, she released another poetry book titled Díptic with Maria Àngels Anglada. This book included a special introduction by Marià Manent and drawings by Ricard Creus.
Public Service and Politics
Núria Albó worked as a teacher for 20 years. In 1979, she was chosen by the people to be the mayor of La Garriga, her hometown. This was a very important role, as she helped lead her community.
In 1980, her novel Desencís (which means "Disillusion") won the Premi Vila de'Arenys. This book is a type of political novel, meaning it tells a story about elections and politics. The characters in her book are described as having many different sides to them. They are seen as kind, smart, and sometimes very clear-thinking, but also as people who might just go along with things and not always take action.
Núria Albó is part of a group of important writers from her time, including Maria Àngels Anglada, Maria Aurèlia Capmany, Clementina Arderiu, Rosa Leveroni, and Maria Beneyto.
