A Look at Oakland's History
Oakland was first settled around 1836. It was originally located about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of where it is today. The town moved to its current spot when the Mississippi and Tennessee Railroad was built in the 1850s. This new railroad helped the town grow.
The Battle of Oakland
During the American Civil War, a battle took place near Oakland on December 3, 1862. Union Army General Cadwallader C. Washburn led about 1,900 cavalry soldiers. They met Confederate Colonel John Summerfield Griffith's 6th Texas Cavalry Regiment. Both sides fought for several hours before they both decided to leave the area.
Oakland's Early Success
In the early 1900s, the farms around Oakland were very productive. They grew crops like corn, cotton, vegetables, and fruits. People even said that Oakland's pears were as good as those from California!
Oakland became a busy and successful town for its size. It had two churches, a cotton gin (a machine that separates cotton fibers from their seeds), schools, many shops, and a bank called The Bank of Oakland.
