History of Oakland
Oakland became its own special town (called a borough) on November 14, 1883. Before that, it was part of Oakland Township. It was first known by other names like North Susquehanna or West Susquehanna, then later as Oakland village.
A famous writer named John Gardner died in Oakland. He wrote many books, including Grendel. He was also a university professor and literary critic. He passed away in a motorcycle accident here.
