Occupy San Francisco was a series of peaceful protests that took place in San Francisco, California. It was part of a larger movement called the Occupy movement, which started in New York City on September 17, 2011. The main idea behind these protests was to speak out against big differences in how much money people had and how much influence large companies had over the government.

In San Francisco, the protests began in places like Justin Herman Plaza and near the Federal Reserve building. People involved in Occupy San Francisco continued to hold meetings and events even after the main camps were taken down.

How the Protests Started

The Occupy San Francisco movement began on September 17, 2011. A small group of about 10 people set up a camp in front of a Bank of America building. They later moved to the Federal Reserve Building on September 29, 2011. Here, they set up tents and sleeping bags to show they were serious about their protest.

On October 7, 2011, city workers and police cleared out this camp. They said it was a public safety risk. One protester was arrested, but the group stayed at the Federal Reserve site.

Key Moments of the Protest

Another protest camp was set up at Justin Herman Plaza on October 15, 2011. The next evening, police and city workers removed this camp too, saying it broke city rules. Five protesters were arrested. However, the camp was rebuilt the very next day.

Protesters also went to a San Francisco Police Commission meeting on October 19, 2011. They wanted to talk about how they were treated. The Police Chief later said he was working with Mayor Ed Lee to provide restrooms and hand-washing stations at Justin Herman Plaza.

Later, on November 16, police raided a part of the Occupy San Francisco camp. They took down 15 tents and arrested seven people. On the same day, hundreds of students marched through downtown San Francisco. They were protesting against rising costs for college. About 200 of them sat down inside a Bank of America branch to protest. They chose this bank because one of the university leaders was on its board. Many protesters were arrested for staying in the bank without permission.

The main camp at Justin Herman Plaza was cleared out early on December 7. Police arrested 70 protesters for staying overnight in a public park. The original protest site outside the Federal Reserve building grew bigger. But on December 11, police also cleared this camp, arresting 55 more protesters.

Protesting Through Marches

Marches were an important way for Occupy San Francisco protesters to share their message. The first march happened on September 29, 2011.

On October 5, 2011, hundreds of people marched from the Federal Reserve protest site to Civic Center Plaza. This was a big gathering to show their concerns.

A very large march took place on October 15, 2011. Thousands of people walked from Justin Herman Plaza to the San Francisco City Hall. This day was called the "Global Day of Action" because similar protests happened all over the world at the same time. It showed how people online worked together to organize these events, including many from Occupy San Francisco.
