History of Ocheyedan
Ocheyedan started in 1884 when the Burlington, Cedar Rapids & Northern Railroad built tracks through the area. This helped the town grow.
The name Ocheyedan is known for being tricky to say! Reader's Digest magazine even called it the "most difficult to pronounce" place name in Iowa. Most people say it like "oh-CHEED-en."
Geography of Ocheyedan
Ocheyedan is located at 43°24′52″N 95°32′7″W / 43.41444°N 95.53528°W. The city covers an area of about 1.16 square miles (2.93 square kilometers), and all of it is land.
There's a common misunderstanding about the highest point in Iowa. Many people think it's the Ocheyedan Mound, which is close to the city. The Ocheyedan Mound is 1,655 feet (504 meters) high. However, the true highest point in Iowa is Hawkeye Point, which is a bit taller at 1,670 feet (509 meters).
The Ocheyedan River flows to the southwest of the city.
