The Odorrana swinhoana is a type of frog from the Ranidae family. This special frog is only found in Taiwan. It lives in hilly areas up to 2,000 m (6,600 ft) high. It was named after Robert Swinhoe, a British naturalist. People also call it the Swinhoe's brown frog or the Taiwan odorous frog.

What Does the Swinhoe's Frog Look Like?

Swinhoe's frogs are medium to large in size. They can grow up to 12 cm (4.7 in) long. These frogs can live for about 11 years. Their size can be different depending on where they live. Frogs from lower areas are usually smaller than those from higher up.

Appearance

The back of this frog is bright green. Its sides can be brown or green. They often have white or dark spots. The skin on their back feels a bit bumpy. Their belly is white. Their fingertips have special pads. Their toes have good webbing, which helps them swim.

Tadpole Life

The baby frogs, called tadpoles, are special. They are made for living in fast-moving water. They have a strong sucking disc on their belly. This helps them stick to rocks in the current. Their backs are green.

Where Do Swinhoe's Frogs Live?

Odorrana swinhoana frogs live in streams found in hills. They prefer forests with broadleaf trees. They hunt for food both on land and in the water. Their favorite foods are insects and spiders. They also eat snails, crabs, and centipedes.

Reproduction and Life Cycle

These frogs breed in small, shady, rocky creeks in the mountains. The male frogs call out day and night. They usually hide in cracks among the rocks. The female frogs lay their eggs under the water. They attach the eggs to rocks.

Conservation

The Swinhoe's frog is a common species. It is not currently facing serious threats. However, farming and building new roads can sometimes be a problem. Luckily, these frogs live in several protected areas. This helps keep them safe.
