Oil City is located in the state of California, in a part of the state called Kern County. It is found about 5 miles (8 kilometers) northeast of a larger city named Bakersfield. This area is very close to a big oil field known as the Kern River Oil Field.

It is found within the Coalinga Oil Field, about 9 miles (14 kilometers) north of Coalinga. This other Oil City is at an elevation of 449 feet (137 meters) above sea level.
