Oil Trough is a small town in Independence County, Arkansas, in the United States. In 2010, about 260 people lived there. The town got its interesting name in the early 1800s. People believe it came from a large wooden trough. This trough was used to melt down bear fat, which was then sold to people in New Orleans.
Where is Oil Trough?
Oil Trough is located on the south side of the White River. It sits along Arkansas Highway 14. To the east, about four miles away, is Elmo. To the west, about five miles away, is Rosie.
Another road, Arkansas Highway 122, crosses the White River. This is about one mile east of Oil Trough. It connects the town to Newark, which is about five miles to the north.
The United States Census Bureau says the town covers a total area of 0.5 square kilometers (0.2 square miles). All of this area is land.

Years ago, Oil Trough had its own school district, called the Oil Trough School District. This district closed on July 1, 1990. Parts of it joined the Newark School District and the Southside School District.
Later, on July 1, 2004, the Newark School District, which included Oil Trough, joined with the Cedar Ridge School District. This is why students now go to schools in the Cedar Ridge district.
