History of Okaton

Okaton started in 1906. This was when the Milwaukee Railroad was built through the area. The town used to have its own post office. However, this office closed in 2013. Now, people in Okaton get their mail from Murdo.

There was also a "western town" tourist spot. It had a petting zoo and a store. This attraction is no longer there. The town's main businesses were on a road far from the interstate highway. This highway was built to bypass the town.

The railroad closing and the new interstate highway caused the town to shrink. Fewer people visited or lived there.
