A Look Back: Murdo's History
Murdo was started around 1907 by a big train company called the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad. It was a perfect spot for trains because it was about halfway between Rapid City and Mitchell. The town had a special building for fixing trains, a large train yard, and a station for passengers. Trains like the "Sioux" used to stop there.
The city got its name from a famous cattle rancher named Murdo MacKenzie. Did you know that John Thune, a United States Senator, is from Murdo, South Dakota?
