Okutama (奥多摩町, Okutama-machi) is a small town located in the western part of Greater Metropolitan Tokyo, Japan. It is known for its beautiful mountains, forests, and a large lake. Even though it's part of Tokyo, Okutama feels very different from the busy city center. It's a peaceful place where people can enjoy nature.

Okutama covers an area of about 225.63 square kilometers. This makes it a large town in terms of land size. It is mostly covered by mountains and forests.
Mountains and Peaks
Okutama is home to Mount Kumotori. This mountain is Tokyo's highest peak, reaching 2017 meters (about 6,617 feet) tall. Mount Kumotori acts as a natural border. It separates Okutama from the Okuchichibu Mountains region. This region spans the nearby Saitama and Yamanashi Prefectures.
Tokyo's Edges
The northernmost and westernmost points of Tokyo are found in Okutama. This means if you travel as far north or west as you can in Tokyo, you'll be in Okutama.
Lake Okutama: A Water Source
One of the most important features of Okutama is Lake Okutama. This large lake is located above the Ogōchi Dam. It serves as a very important source of drinking water for the millions of people living in Tokyo. The lake is also a popular spot for outdoor activities.
