Old Homestead is a neighborhood located in Southgate, Michigan, a suburb near Detroit. It's known for its quiet streets and family homes. The neighborhood is surrounded by Superior Street to the north and Eureka Road to the south. To the east is M-85 (Fort Street), and to the west are Trenton Road or Burns Street.
You'll find shops and businesses along Eureka Road and Fort Street. Most of Old Homestead has single-family houses. Many of these homes were built in the 1940s and 1950s. Common house styles include one-story ranch homes, one-and-a-half-story Cape Cods, and two-story colonial revivals.
History of Old Homestead
Old Homestead was first planned in 1923. At that time, it was part of Ecorse Township. For about 20 years, most of the land was used for farming. Only a few streets from the original plan still have their first names today. These include Sycamore, Chestnut, Commonwealth, and Superior Streets.
In 1958, the remaining parts of Ecorse Township became the city of Southgate. Old Homestead was included in this change and became part of Southgate.
Schools Serving Old Homestead
Students living in Old Homestead attend schools outside the neighborhood. They go to Fordline and Grogan Elementary Schools. For middle school, they attend Davidson Middle School. High school students go to Southgate Anderson High School.
Before the 2012–13 school year, students also attended Chormann Elementary School. Before 1982, Old Homestead was part of the McCann school district. Students went to Southgate High School, which later became Southgate Anderson. Even earlier, before Southgate High School opened, students attended Theodore Roosevelt High School in Wyandotte.
Getting Around: Public Transportation
The Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART) offers bus services near Old Homestead. Three bus routes run along the neighborhood's borders.
- Route #125: This bus travels along Eureka Road and Fort Street. It goes from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport to River Rouge. It also stops at Southland Center. During busy weekday hours, it continues into downtown Detroit.
- Route #160: This route runs along Eureka Road, which is the southern edge of Old Homestead. It connects the neighborhood to Trenton and downtown Wyandotte. It also stops at Wayne County Community College District's Downriver Campus and Southland Center.
- Route #830: This is a special service for weekday busy hours. It runs along Trenton Road in Old Homestead. This route connects Trenton to downtown Detroit for commuters.
