A Look Back at the Old Post Office
The Old Mittagong Post Office was built a long time ago, between 1890 and 1891. The land for the building was bought in 1887. A company called Gatty and Flook built it for £1393.
Over the years, the building changed a bit. Around 1948, the verandah (a covered porch) was taken away. After 1949, the balcony was changed to have windows with glass louvres. Some decorative metal railings were also removed.
Originally, the building had exposed brick walls. Over time, parts of it were painted. Then, the paint was removed again. A photo from 1917 shows that one side of the building was painted, but the front was not.
The New Post Office
In 1962, plans started for a new post office. This new building was going to be on Hume Highway. It opened on August 4, 1964. After the new one opened, the old post office on Station Street closed its doors.
What is it Now?
In October 2015, the local council approved plans to change the old building. Most of the ground floor was to become a cafe. The rest of the ground floor and the whole first floor would be used for homes and offices. Two new two-story buildings were also approved for the site. In February 2018, the ground floor was empty.
Why is it a Heritage Site?
The Old Mittagong Post Office is listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register. This means it is a very important historical building. It was added to this list on April 2, 1999. Being on this list helps protect the building. It ensures that its history and special features are kept safe for the future.
