History of Rainworth Store
The Rainworth Stone Store is a single-story building made of stone. It was built in 1862 for Jesse Gregson. He needed a strong place to store supplies for his huge 100,000-acre Rainworth Station. The store was built near Rainworth Creek. Today, it is part of the Old Rainworth Fort Tourist Complex.
Early Explorers and Settlers
In 1844, an explorer named Ludwig Leichhardt explored the area near Springsure. He named some places like Expedition Range and Comet Creek. Later, in 1846, Major Thomas Mitchell also traveled through this region.
The area was officially opened for settlement in 1854. However, it was only after William Landsborough explored the Springsure area in 1858 that people started to set up farms and stations there.
Starting Rainworth Station
In 1860, Queensland's Surveyor-General, Augustus Charles Gregory, explored the area. He named a flat-topped hill Rainworth Hill. Gregory then leased several pieces of land in the district.
By September 1862, Jesse Gregson, along with Alexander and William Busby, took over these leases. They combined them to form Rainworth Station. Jesse Gregson had traveled from England in the mid-1850s. He learned about managing livestock and became a partner with Alexander Busby. In 1860, Gregson brought 5,000 sheep to Queensland and started Rainworth Station. He became the manager and lived on the property.
Gregson described Rainworth as a "lovely tract of open country" with a small creek and beautiful hills. The main station buildings were first made of timber.
Building the Stone Store for Safety
In October 1861, a few months after Gregson moved to Rainworth, a terrible event happened nearby. The local Kari people attacked a property called Cullin-la-ringo. This event, known as the Cullin-la-ringo massacre, caused great fear among the settlers.
Because of this fear, construction began on the stone store at Rainworth in 1862. The store was built from stone to protect supplies from fire and to act as a safe place during any attacks. The builder was an Englishman named George Goldring. He arrived at Rainworth in 1862 and was first hired as a bookkeeper.
To build the store, Goldring used local materials. He burned lime, made bricks, and collected basalt boulders. He used a special mortar mix made from sand, lime, and crushed basalt to hold the walls together. It is believed that the roof was covered with galvanized iron, which was very new for the area at that time. The Rainworth Store is the only stone building known to have been built by Goldring in Queensland.
Jesse Gregson's Impact
By 1867, Gregson had set up all the necessary buildings at Rainworth. He also started using wire fencing on 20,000 acres of land. This was one of the first times wire fencing was used in the district.
Jesse Gregson played a big part in developing the Springsure area. He was the postmaster until 1864. He also helped build roads as a member of the Springsure Road Trust. In 1865, he helped start a local agricultural society to improve the quality of farm animals. Gregson was the first Secretary of this society.
In 1874, Gregson left Rainworth to become the Superintendent of the Australian Agricultural Company. He held this important job until 1905.
Changes in Ownership and Preservation
After the Gregson family left in 1874, the property was managed by James Nesbit. The Commercial Banking Company of Sydney later took ownership.
Over the years, the land policies changed. Large properties were divided into smaller ones. However, owners could keep some land as freehold to protect important buildings like the main station house and sheds. In 1877, the Rainworth Head Station blocks were surveyed. At that time, the property had a large house, a kitchen, the stone store with cellars, and other buildings.
The Commercial Banking Company of Sydney received the land titles in 1878 and 1880. In 1888, Francis Hamilton Beadon Turner became the owner. The property changed hands a few more times.
In 1919, Alexander McLaughlin bought the Rainworth Head Station freehold. His family has owned it ever since. From this time, the freehold land became known as Old Rainworth.
In 1940, Alexander McLaughlin divided his land among his children. In 1973, two of his granddaughters, Colleen McLaughlin and Lorna Smith, bought Old Rainworth. They were worried about the old stone store falling apart. They created a committee to help preserve it. In 1981, a stonemason named Gino Sandrin was hired to restore the building. He used original stones and cement to fix it.
Developing the Tourist Complex
In 1987, the Old Cairdbeign homestead, which was built in the 1870s, was moved and rebuilt at Old Rainworth. This was part of developing the site into a historical tourist complex. A timber worker named Robert Young rebuilt the homestead.
The first owner of Cairdbeign was Archibald Buchanan. His homestead was the first built on Rainworth Creek. Later, the main station was moved, and a new house was built using some timber from an old barn. Some of these old timbers can still be seen in the Cairdbeign homestead at the Rainworth complex. The former Cairdbeign School has also been moved to Old Rainworth.
Today, Old Rainworth is a popular tourist spot. It is especially interesting for tourists and school children who visit to learn about history.
Old Rainworth Museum
The museum complex at Old Rainworth is a great place to explore history. It includes:
- The stone storehouse, which is still in its original condition.
- The Cairdbeign homestead, which was moved here from another location.
- The original school building from the 1800s.
The museum has many old items and artifacts that show what life was like in the past. These items are very important to the local area's history.
Colleen McLaughlin and her sister Lorna Smith are the current caretakers of the fort. They believe the site is very important. They have heard many visitors say how important it is to keep this history alive. They feel that the Old Rainworth Stone Store is unique in Australia and must be preserved for future generations.
What the Stone Store Looks Like
The Old Rainworth Stone Store is located about 10 kilometers from Springsure. You can get there by driving south on the Dawson Highway and then turning onto Wealwandangie Road.
The store has been partly rebuilt to keep it strong. It is a single-story building with a corrugated iron roof that slopes down. It has a U-shaped verandah that goes around the front and parts of the sides. The building is made from local basalt stone. The stones are held together with a special mortar made from crushed basalt found in the area.
Inside, the building has six rooms, a cellar, and a loft. The stone walls are very thick, about 35 to 45 centimeters.
Inside the Store
You enter the main room on the western side through double timber doors. These doors have their original fittings. The main room has a timber floor and windows. There is also a timber frame of an old partition wall inside.
From the main room, timber stairs lead up to the loft. The steps are narrow, and a new handrail has been added for safety. The loft also has a timber floor.
Cellar and Other Rooms
The verandah has a stone floor. From the western side of the verandah, another set of timber stairs leads down to a cellar. The cellar walls and floor are also made of stone, and there are several vents in the walls to keep it cool.
The eastern part of the building has three more rooms. The rooms at each end have stone walls and floors. The middle room has an earthen floor and an outer wall made of horizontal timber slabs.
Outside the building, to the southwest, you can see the remains of what looks like an old arbor, made from bush timbers. Right next to this area was the original Rainworth Homestead, but there are no visible remains of it today.
Why Rainworth Stone Store is Important
The Old Rainworth Stone Store was listed on the Queensland Heritage Register in 1992. This means it is a very important historical site. Here's why:
Showing Queensland's History
The store helps us understand how Queensland developed. In the early days, large farms and stations were set up before towns. Because Rainworth Station was so far from any big settlements, Jesse Gregson built this strong stone building in 1862. It was used to store and protect supplies that only arrived twice a year from Rockhampton. Its construction shows how important it was to have good storage in remote areas with tough weather.
A Rare Old Building
The Rainworth Stone Store is a rare example of a mid-19th century stone building. It was built specifically to store supplies for long periods. Not many stores on large properties in Queensland were built from stone during this time, making it quite unique.
Learning About the Past
As a rare stone building from the mid-1800s, the Rainworth Stone Store can teach us a lot. By studying it and looking at old records, we can learn about how stone buildings were designed and used back then. We can also understand what life was like on a remote farm and about the people who built these structures. Any old items found around the former homestead can also give us clues about daily life on a working farm in the late 1800s and 1900s.
A Great Example of a Fortified Store
The Rainworth Stone Store is still mostly in its original condition. It shows us the main features of a strong, fortified store on an early, remote farm. It was built using traditional European building methods and local materials. These materials also helped keep the building cool or warm, acting as natural insulation.
Important to the Community
The Rainworth Stone Store is highly valued by the local community. It is one of the oldest buildings still standing in the area and connects people to the past. As part of a tourist attraction, the Rainworth Stone Store is recognized as a very important part of the district's history.
