The Old River Lea is the original, natural path of the River Lea in London. It flows through the London Borough of Hackney. This part of the river is no longer the main channel.

What is the Old River Lea?

The Old River Lea is like an old, natural pathway for the River Lea. It starts below a place called Lea Bridge. This river section takes a big, winding path. It eventually joins back with the main River Lee Navigation. This happens near Old Ford Lock, which is west of the 2012 Olympic stadium.

Where Does It Flow?

This old river channel stretches for about 3.2 kilometers (2 miles). It begins at the Middlesex Filter Beds Weir. From there, it makes many bends and turns. It then flows until it meets the main River Lee Navigation again.

Connecting Waterways

The Old River Lea connects with other waterways. It joins up with the River Lee Flood Relief Channel. It also meets Dagenham Brook and other smaller channels. Together, these form a system called the Bow Back Rivers. These rivers are partly affected by the tides. They eventually flow into Bow Creek.

Its Role in London

The natural path of the Old River Lea forms a border. It separates the London Boroughs of Hackney and Waltham Forest. It also marks the eastern edge of Hackney Marshes. Historically, it was the western border of Leyton Marshes.
