Oleksandr Stanislavovych Syrskyi (Ukrainian: Олександр Станіславович Сирський; born 26 July 1965) is a top military leader from Ukraine. He holds the highest rank of general. Since February 2024, he has been the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This means he is in charge of all of Ukraine's military forces.
Before this important role, he led the Ukrainian Ground Forces from 2019 to 2024. During the Russian invasion of Ukraine, General Syrskyi played a key part. He led the defense of Ukraine's capital city, Kyiv, in 2022. He also commanded a successful counterattack in the Kharkiv region in September 2022.

Biography
Early Life and Military Training
Oleksandr Syrskyi was born on July 26, 1965. His birthplace was a village called Novinki in what was then the Soviet Union. His family was a military family.
When he was 15, his father's military job moved them to Kharkiv, Ukraine. Oleksandr finished high school there. He then went to the Moscow Higher Military Command School. This was a very important military academy in the Soviet Union. After graduating in 1986, he joined the Soviet Artillery Corps. He served in different places, including Afghanistan and Czechoslovakia. This was before the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Joining the Ukrainian Army
After the Soviet Union broke apart, Syrskyi's military unit in Chuhuiv became part of the Ukrainian army in 1993. He was quickly promoted to lead a battalion. This is a group of soldiers. He continued his education, graduating from the National Defense University of Ukraine in 1996. He earned another degree from the same university in 2005.
In the early 2000s, he became the commander of the 72nd Mechanized Brigade. He was also promoted to the rank of major-general. Later, he worked in important staff roles. In 2013, he was stationed at NATO's headquarters in Brussels. He is married to a Ukrainian woman and has two sons.
Role in the War in Donbas
When the war started in Eastern Ukraine in 2014, General Syrskyi was a chief of staff for anti-terrorist operations. He was one of the main commanders during the Battle of Debaltseve in 2015. He helped lead battles in different towns. He also helped coordinate the safe withdrawal of Ukrainian soldiers from Debaltseve.
Because of his actions during the Battle of Debaltseve, he received the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky III degree. He was also promoted to lieutenant-general. In 2016, he led the Joint Operational Headquarters. This group helps coordinate different Ukrainian security forces in the Donbas region.
In August 2019, Syrskyi became the Commander of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In August 2020, he was promoted to the rank of colonel general.
Leadership During the Russian Invasion
When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, General Syrskyi was crucial. He organized and led the defense of Kyiv. His leadership helped prevent the capital city from falling.
In April 2022, he was awarded the Hero of Ukraine for his efforts. This is one of Ukraine's highest honors. In September 2022, he was recognized as the leader behind the successful Kharkiv counteroffensive. This was a major military success for Ukraine.
On February 8, 2024, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy appointed General Syrskyi as the new commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This made him the top military leader in the country. One of his first big decisions was to order Ukrainian forces to withdraw from Avdiivka in February 2024. This was done to protect soldiers' lives and avoid being surrounded.
In April 2024, he announced that Ukrainian forces had moved back from some villages in the Donetsk region. This was because their positions were no longer safe. In July 2024, General Syrskyi stated that Ukraine aims to reach its internationally recognized borders from 1991. He also discussed plans to use F-16 fighter jets to stop Russian missiles. On August 23, 2024, he was promoted to the rank of General.
