Olga Grey (born Anushka Zacsek or Anna Zacsek, November 10, 1896 – April 25, 1973) was an American actress. She was famous for her roles in silent films. Sometimes, her last name was spelled as Olga Gray.
Olga was born in New York City. Her parents were immigrants from Hungary. Her father wanted her to play the violin. So, she studied music for a while. But Olga really dreamed of becoming an actress. She acted in some small plays first. Then, she joined a special theater group in Los Angeles. Her success there helped her start working in movies.
Becoming a Silent Film Star
When Olga was a teenager, she moved to Hollywood. She wanted to become a professional actress. She started by working as an extra in films. An extra is someone who appears in the background. Her very first movie role was in 1915. It was a film called His Lesson, and she played the main character!
In 1915, Olga acted in twelve different movies. One of her most famous roles was in The Birth of a Nation. In this film, she played an actress named Laura Keene. She also worked with famous stars like Lillian Gish and Mae Marsh. The movie was directed by D. W. Griffith.
More Film Roles
In 1916, Olga Grey appeared in seven more films. She played "Lady Agnes" in a movie version of Macbeth. She also had a role in the well-known film Intolerance.
Between 1917 and 1920, she acted in eleven more movies. However, the quality of her roles slowly started to decline.
Life After Acting
In 1920, Olga Grey married a film actor named Arnold Gregg. His real name was Arnold Ray Samberg. After her acting career, Olga decided to try something new. She went back to school and studied law.
She became an attorney (a lawyer) in 1932. She used her birth name, Anna Zacsek, for her law career. Anna Zacsek was a very dedicated lawyer. She was known for her work in important court cases. She was also the only woman attorney in the courtroom for some of these trials.
Anna Zacsek lived in Los Angeles for many years. She passed away on April 25, 1973, when she was 76 years old.
