Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Olga Kharlampovich (born March 25, 1960, in Sverdlovsk, Russia) is a Russian-Canadian mathematician. She is well-known for her work in a field called group theory. Currently, she is a special professor of Mathematics at the CUNY Graduate Center and Hunter College in the United States.

Her Big Discoveries

Olga Kharlampovich is famous for solving some very difficult math problems. One of her big achievements was solving a long-standing puzzle called the Novikov–Adian problem. This problem was about understanding certain types of mathematical groups.

She also worked with A. Myasnikov to solve the Tarski conjecture. This was another big math mystery from 1945. It was about how different groups in math relate to each other. Solving these problems showed her amazing skill in mathematics.

Her work also helped create a new area of study called "algebraic geometry for groups." This field combines ideas from different parts of mathematics. It has become an important new direction in combinatorial group theory.

Her Journey in Math

Olga Kharlampovich earned her first advanced degree, a Ph.D., in 1984 from Leningrad State University. Her teacher was Lev Shevrin. Later, in 1990, she received an even higher degree, a "Doctor of Science," from the Moscow Steklov Institute of Mathematics. This is a very respected math institute in Russia.

Before joining CUNY, she taught at Ural State University in Russia. She then became a Professor of Mathematics at McGill University in Montreal, Canada, starting in 1990.

In August 2011, she moved to Hunter College in New York. There, she became the first person to hold the special Mary P. Dolciani Professorship in Mathematics. This shows how highly she is valued in the math world.

Awards and Honors

Olga Kharlampovich has received many awards for her important work. In 1981, she won a Medal from the Soviet Academy of Sciences. This was for her early work on the Novikov–Adian problem.

In 1984, she received an award from the Ural Mathematical Society. This was for solving the Malcev–Kargapolov problem. This problem, posed in 1965, was about finding a way to solve certain math questions using algorithms.

The Canadian Mathematical Society awarded her the 1996 Krieger–Nelson Prize. This prize recognized her work on algorithmic problems in different types of groups and Lie algebras.

In 2015, she was given the Mal'cev Prize. This award was for her many contributions to solving important problems in algebra.

In 2020, she was chosen as a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. This honor is given to mathematicians who have made big contributions to the field. Her work in areas like algorithmic and geometric group theory, algebra, and logic was recognized.
