Oliver Gilbert's Public Service Journey
Oliver Gilbert III studied Criminal Justice at Florida A&M University. He later earned his law degree from the University of Miami School of Law. After finishing his studies, he began his career in public service.
Early Steps in Politics
In 2000, Oliver Gilbert started working as a legislative aide. This means he helped a state representative with laws and public issues. Later, he worked for a former U.S. Attorney General during her campaign for governor. These experiences helped him learn a lot about how government works.
Serving Miami Gardens
After working as a prosecutor and then as a lawyer in private practice, Oliver Gilbert decided to run for mayor of Miami Gardens. This city was newly formed in 2003. He was appointed to the Miami Gardens city council in 2008. Four years later, in 2012, he was elected mayor. He was the second African-American person to hold this important position. Miami Gardens is a very large city in Florida. It is also the third largest city in Miami-Dade County.
Becoming a County Commissioner
When Oliver Gilbert ran for Miami-Dade County Commissioner, he faced Sybrina Fulton. She is a well-known community advocate. Many important people from the Democratic Party supported Ms. Fulton. However, Oliver Gilbert won the election in August with 50.5% of the votes. This meant a second election was not needed.
