Olney is a small, quiet community in Coal County, Oklahoma, in the United States. It's not a big city, but an unincorporated community. You can find it about seven miles west of a town called Lehigh.
The Story of Olney
This community was started by two brothers, Eliphalet Nott and James Brooks Wright. Their father was Allen Wright, an important leader of the Choctaw people.
How Olney Got Its Name
When the community first began, it had a different name: Parmicho. This name came from the Choctaw language. In Choctaw, "pala misha" means "lighted place in the distance." This special name came from a lantern that used to hang at the railway station, lighting up the area.
Later, on July 12, 1902, the community's name was officially changed to Olney. That's the name it still has today!
