Olimpia Fulvia Morata (1526 – 26 October 1555) was an incredibly smart Italian scholar. She was known for her deep knowledge of classical languages and ancient texts.

A Young Genius: Early Life and Learning

Olimpia was born in Ferrara, Italy, in 1526. Her father, Fulvio Pellegrino Morato, was a tutor to young princes. He was also friends with many of Italy's most learned people. This meant Olimpia grew up in a home filled with books and classical studies.

She was a very quick learner. By the age of twelve, she could speak both Greek and Latin fluently! Imagine being able to talk in two ancient languages before you're even a teenager.

Life at the Royal Court

Around this time, Olimpia was invited to live at the palace. She became a companion and teacher to Anna d'Este, who was the daughter of Renata, the Duchess of Ferrara. Anna was also very gifted, and the two girls learned together.

The Duchess's court was a lively place. Many famous writers and thinkers visited, including John Calvin and Clément Marot. While still a teenager, Olimpia even gave lectures on the works of Cicero and Calvin. This shows how respected her knowledge was, even at a young age.

New Paths and Challenges

In 1546, Olimpia left the court to care for her sick father. After he passed away, she took on the important job of educating her younger brothers and sisters. Her father had become a Protestant, and Olimpia also embraced the ideas of Luther and Calvin. These were new ways of thinking about Christianity at the time.

When she returned to court, things had changed. Anna d'Este had married, and Olimpia felt a bit alone. She spent her time studying philosophy and writing letters to other scholars.

Marriage and Difficult Journeys

Around 1550, Olimpia married Andreas Grundler. He was a young student of medicine and philosophy from Schweinfurt in Bavaria. In 1554, she went with Andreas to his hometown, where he became a doctor for the soldiers there.

However, their lives soon became very difficult. A powerful leader named Albert of Brandenburg attacked Schweinfurt. The city was then surrounded by other armies. Olimpia and Andreas managed to escape, but they lost many of Olimpia's valuable writings during this dangerous time.

Finding a New Home

After their escape, Olimpia and Andreas finally reached Heidelberg in 1554. Here, Andreas was able to get a job as a medical lecturer. This was thanks to the help of the Erbach family, who had kindly given them shelter during their flight.

Sadly, Olimpia passed away in 1555. After her death, a major collection of her works was published in Basel. This book, called Opera omnia, included some of her Greek letters and Latin dialogues. Olimpia had asked her friend, Caelius Secundus Curio, to help publish her writings. This way, her amazing ideas and knowledge could live on.
