A Look at Omaha's History

Omaha got its first post office on August 7, 1873. At that time, about 35 people lived there.

By 1884, Omaha had four steam sawmills and four flour mills. In 1892, more businesses opened. These included a saw and grist mill, a general store, and a blacksmith shop.

An old advertisement for Omaha said the town was on the Missouri Pacific Railroad. It was also on "State Highway 65." The ad claimed the school had 450 students. It also said the town had electric and phone service. There was a bank, a canning factory, and many other stores. The ad said the town started in 1878. This was after J.H. Middleton came from Missouri and opened a general store.

In the 1930s, Omaha tried to become a "border city." This was because it was close to the Arkansas/Missouri state line. Missouri had lower gas taxes than Arkansas. Omaha wanted to use this to its advantage. But in 1941, the state supreme court said this idea was not valid.

How a New Road Changed Omaha

The old U.S. Route 65 used to go right through Omaha. This meant travelers from places like Harrison had to drive through Omaha to get to Missouri. Businesses along this road did very well.

In late 1999, a new U.S. Route 65 opened. This new road was safer and made travel faster. But it completely bypassed Omaha. This meant cars no longer drove through the town. Businesses that relied on tourists felt the change right away. Many were very sad about it. Some businesses even planned to move to Branson. People said that many travelers would never even know Omaha existed anymore. The old US 65 became so quiet that dogs could safely lie in the street.

A famous football player, Brandon Burlsworth, is buried in Gass Cemetery in Omaha. He played for the University of Arkansas.
