Omak Rock, also known as Balance Rock, is a very special balancing rock found in the Colville Indian Reservation in the state of Washington, United States. This amazing rock sits near Omak Lake and is a type of glacial erratic. This means it was moved to its current spot by a huge glacier long ago. Omak Rock is famous because it survived a big earthquake in 1872. Its survival helps scientists study how strong that earthquake was. The Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation see Omak Rock as a beautiful symbol of nature's perfection.

What is Omak Rock?

Omak Rock is a type of rock called a "balancing rock." This means it's a large rock that rests on a smaller base in a way that looks like it could tip over at any moment, but it doesn't! It's a natural wonder that seems to defy gravity.

How it Formed

Omak Rock is also known as a "glacial erratic." This term describes a rock that has been moved by a glacier from its original location. During the last Ice Age, massive sheets of ice, called glaciers, covered much of North America. As these glaciers moved, they picked up rocks of all sizes. When the ice melted, these rocks were left behind, sometimes far from where they started. Omak Rock is made of granite, a very hard rock. It sits about 1,340 feet (408 meters) from Omak Lake.

A Survivor of Earthquakes

One of the most interesting facts about Omak Rock is its connection to a major historical event: the 1872 North Cascades earthquake. This earthquake was one of the strongest ever recorded in the Pacific Northwest.

Studying the Earthquake

Scientists are very interested in Omak Rock because it survived the 1872 earthquake. A balancing rock like Omak Rock is very sensitive to ground shaking. If an earthquake is strong enough, it should cause a balancing rock to fall over. Since Omak Rock is still standing, it gives scientists clues about how much the ground shook during the 1872 earthquake. By studying rocks like Omak Rock, researchers can figure out the strength and intensity of past earthquakes. Some experts even believe that the epicenter (the point on the Earth's surface directly above where an earthquake starts) of the 1872 quake might have been very close to Omak Rock.

A Special Place for the Colville Tribes

Omak Rock holds deep cultural meaning for the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation. This group of Native American tribes lives on the land where the rock is located.

Symbol of Nature

For the Colville Tribes, Omak Rock is more than just a geological feature. They see it as a powerful symbol of the natural world's amazing balance and beauty. It represents the perfection and strength of nature in their homeland. The rock is a reminder of the long history of their people and their connection to the land.
