Omar Blondin Diop's Life and Activism
Omar Blondin Diop was born in Niger. He lived and was very active in politics in many different countries. He spent time as a student and organizer in France and Senegal.
Student Life in Paris
While living in Paris, France, Omar was part of a movement that focused on ideas about fairness and equality for everyone. He even appeared as a student activist in a 1967 film called La Chinoise, directed by Jean-Luc Godard.
He also took part in the May 68 uprising. This was a time when many students and workers in France protested for changes in society. Because of his political activities, he was asked to leave France in 1969.
Activism in Senegal
After leaving France, Diop continued his important work back in Senegal. He spoke out against the government led by Léopold Sédar Senghor. Many people felt this government was too influenced by France.
Omar worked with other young activists, including his two brothers. They were part of groups like the Movement of Young Marxist–Leninists (MJML) and the Committee for the Initiative for Permanent Revolutionary Action (CIARP). These groups wanted to bring about big changes in Senegal.
His Death in Prison
In 1973, Omar Blondin Diop and other activists were arrested. They had been planning ways to challenge the Senegalese government. Sadly, Omar died while he was in prison.
His younger brother, Mohamed, was in a nearby cell and heard what happened. Omar's father, who was a medical doctor, also looked into the cause of his death. Many people who supported Omar believe that his death was not natural and that he was killed. To this day, many feel that justice has not been fully served for Omar Blondin Diop.
