Omar Elabdellaoui (born December 5, 1991) is a professional football player from Norway. He plays as a right back or a right midfielder. Omar started his football journey with Skeid in Norway. He then joined Manchester City in 2008.
Even though he was with Manchester City, he never played a main team game for them. He made his first professional appearance while on loan at Strømsgodset in Norway. He also played on loan for Feyenoord in the Netherlands. After a loan spell with Eintracht Braunschweig in Germany, he joined them permanently in 2013.
In 2014, Omar signed with Olympiacos in Greece. He stayed there until 2020, then moved to Galatasaray in Turkey. Omar played for Norway's youth teams and was part of the team in the 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship. He also played for the senior Norwegian national team from 2013 to 2020.
Club Career Highlights
Early Career with Manchester City
Omar Elabdellaoui joined the English club Manchester City when he was 16 years old. Before that, he played for the Norwegian club Skeid. His coach at City's U18 team, Scott Sellars, believed Omar had a bright future in football.
Omar did very well in the academy. He even got a first-team number for the 2010–11 season. He was on the bench for a Europa League match against Juventus in December 2010.
Loan to Strømsgodset
On March 31, 2011, Omar was loaned to Strømsgodset in Norway. This loan lasted until Manchester City's pre-season training began in July. At Strømsgodset, he played with former City teammates Mohammed Abu and Razak Nuhu.
He played eight league games before he broke his foot in a match in May 2011. He went back to Manchester for surgery. He returned to Strømsgodset in September. He played a total of 12 matches there, scoring one goal and making one assist.
Playing for Feyenoord
In June 2012, Omar signed a new two-year contract with Manchester City. He was then loaned to the Dutch club Feyenoord for the 2012–13 season. His former City teammate, John Guidetti, who had played for Feyenoord, suggested that Omar would be a great fit for the club.
Guidetti said Omar was strong, skilled, and fast. Feyenoord's director, Martin van Geel, mentioned that Omar would mostly play as a winger but could also play as an attacking midfielder. Omar played five matches for Feyenoord, mostly as a substitute. In January 2013, he asked to leave the club because he wanted to play more regularly.
Time at Eintracht Braunschweig
In January 2013, Omar was loaned to the German club Eintracht Braunschweig. He played there for the second half of the 2012–13 season in the 2. Bundesliga. He quickly became a regular player. His team earned a promotion to the top German league, the Bundesliga.
On May 10, the club announced that Omar's loan deal was made permanent. He made his debut in the Bundesliga on August 10, 2013, against Werder Bremen. He started the first three games as a right back.
Joining Olympiacos
On June 17, 2014, the Greek club Olympiacos offered Omar a contract. He signed with them the next day. He said he was very excited to join the club.
Loan to Hull City
On January 20, 2017, Omar signed a loan deal with Hull City in England. He joined his national teammates Markus Henriksen and Adama Diomande there. Hull City had the option to sign him permanently later. He played his first game for Hull City two days later against Chelsea.
Return to Olympiacos and Captaincy
Omar's good performance during the 2018–19 season caught the attention of other clubs. However, Olympiacos wanted at least 5 million euros for him.
For the 2019–20 season, Omar was made the club captain. He played 47 matches in all competitions. He was a very important player as his team won the Greek Super League. In August 2020, he announced that he was leaving Olympiacos.
Time at Galatasaray
After leaving Olympiacos, Omar signed a three-year deal with the Turkish club Galatasaray. His contract was reportedly worth €4,050,000 in salary.
On December 31, 2020, during New Year celebrations, Omar had a serious accident involving fireworks, which caused injuries to his eyes. He was taken to the hospital for treatment, with doctors especially concerned about his eyes.
Omar returned to training in July 2021, wearing special protective glasses. In February 2022, after more than ten eye surgeries, he was ready to play again. His eyes were rebuilt in the United States with help from his sister and an anonymous donor. His contract with Galatasaray was ended on September 2, 2022.
Return to Norway with Bodø/Glimt
In December 2022, Omar signed a contract with Bodø/Glimt in Norway. He joined them for the 2023 and 2024 seasons. In his first year at Bodø/Glimt, he helped the club win their third league title in just four seasons.
