Onat Kutlar (born January 25, 1936 – died January 11, 1995) was an important Turkish writer and poet. He was the person who started the Turkish Sinematek and helped create the Istanbul International Film Festival.

About Onat Kutlar

Onat Kutlar was born in Alanya, Turkey, on January 25, 1936. His grandfather, Arif Pasha, was a governor in the old Ottoman Empire. His father, Ali Riza Bey, was a judge in the new Turkish Republic. His mother was Meliha Hanim.

Onat grew up in Gaziantep. He studied law at Istanbul University and philosophy in Paris. His book, Ishak (1959), was a collection of nine short stories. Many of these stories are told from a child's point of view. They often have a dream-like or mysterious feeling. This book won the "Turkish Language Association Short Story Award" in 1960. A critic named Fethi Naci said these stories were an early example of "magical realism." This is a style where magical things happen in a real-world setting.

In 1985, Onat Kutlar was a judge at the 35th Berlin International Film Festival. This is a big movie event. For his work with the Turkish Sinematek, he received the L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1994. He also got the Cultural Medal of Poland in 1975.

Onat Kutlar passed away on January 11, 1995, in Istanbul. He died from injuries he got during an attack on December 30, 1994. This attack happened at a hotel cafeteria in Taksim Square, Istanbul. He was buried at the Aşiyan Asri Cemetery. He was married to Filiz Kutlar.

The International Federation of Film Critics has an award named after him. It is given at the Istanbul International Film Festival. This award remembers his important work for Turkish cinema.
