Early Life and Education
Vickie Gates was born in San Antonio, Texas, on September 25, 1962. She grew up in Lawton, Oklahoma, as one of six children. She had four sisters and one brother.
In 1980, Vickie finished high school at Eisenhower High School. After that, she went to Oklahoma State University from 1982 to 1984.
Bodybuilding Journey
Starting Out as an Amateur
Vickie was always active in sports. She started lifting weights while she was in college. In 1983, she entered her very first bodybuilding competition in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She won!
Vickie kept competing and getting better. She earned her "pro card" in 1993. This means she became a professional bodybuilder. She achieved this by winning the middleweight class at the NPC Nationals.
Becoming a Professional
As a professional, Vickie Gates had many great achievements. She won the Ms. International title three times in a row. These wins were in 1999, 2000, and 2001.
During those same years, she also placed second at the Ms. Olympia competition three times. The Ms. Olympia is one of the biggest and most important contests in professional bodybuilding.
Retirement from Competing
Vickie Gates stopped competing in bodybuilding in 2003. Her last competition was the 2003 Ms. Olympia, where she finished in 7th place.
Her Lasting Impact
In 2010, Vickie Gates was honored for her amazing career. She was added to the IFBB Hall of Fame. This is a special recognition for athletes who have made a big difference in the sport of bodybuilding.
Personal Life
Vickie Gates is a Christian. She enjoys reading the Bible and shopping in her free time. She lives in Arlington, Texas, with her daughter, Kindra.
Since September 1999, Vickie has owned her own gym called Strictly Fitness. It is located in Irving, Texas. She also works there as a personal trainer, helping others reach their fitness goals. She used to work for Bally Total Fitness too.
Vickie was previously married. She also dated Ronnie Coleman, who was an 8-time Mr. Olympia champion. They met at a GNC store in 1992.
