One Little Independent Records is a music company from England. It used to be called One Little Indian Records. It started in 1985 and helps musicians release their songs and albums. Derek Birkett, who used to play bass in a band called Flux of Pink Indians, helped create and manage it. Over the years, it also started other smaller music labels.
How It Started
One Little Independent Records began in 1985. It was created by people from different punk bands. Derek Birkett, who played bass for a band called Flux of Pink Indians, was in charge. The original name, One Little Indian Records, was chosen because of ideas from the Indigenous People of the Americas.
Early Success
The company's first big hits came in 1986 with bands like A.R. Kane and Flux of Pink Indians. Many other famous artists later joined the label. These included Alabama 3, Björk, Chumbawamba, Kitchens of Distinction, The Shamen, Skunk Anansie, and the Sugarcubes.
Growing Bigger
Starting in 1990, One Little Independent Records created several smaller, independent music labels. These included Clean-up Records, Partisan Records, and Fat Cat Records. All of these smaller labels also became successful. In 1995, Elemental Records was added to the group.
The company also bought parts of other old music labels. In 1997 and 2001, they got rights to music from Rough Trade Records and Nude Records. They also got rights to several albums from spinART Records.
In 2009, Paul McCartney from The Beatles worked with Youth to release an album. They called themselves The Fireman. This album, called Electric Arguments, was released through One Little Independent Records.
Name Change
In June 2020, people around the world protested after the murder of George Floyd. This led to many companies thinking about their names and symbols. One Little Indian Records decided to change its name to One Little Independent Records right away. The company also promised to give money to groups that help Native American communities in North America.
Derek Birkett explained the change. He said he learned a lot from a letter he received. The letter explained why the old name and logo could be hurtful. He felt bad but also thankful for learning this important lesson. He realized the name needed to be changed.
