Cody Chesnutt (born October 21, 1968) is an American musician. He plays R&B and neo soul music. Cody is from Atlanta, Georgia.
Biography
Cody Chesnutt's music mixes different styles. You can hear rock, funk, soul, hip hop, and blues in his songs.
Early Career
Cody moved to Los Angeles to work in music. He wrote and produced five songs for an R&B group called Six Feet Deep. Later, Cody and his band, The Crosswalk, signed with Hollywood Records. However, their time with the label was short. The band then broke up.
In 2002, Cody released a special album called The Headphone Masterpiece. It was a double LP, which means it had two records. He recorded it himself in his bedroom studio. He used a 4-track cassette recorder to make the music. He called his studio "The Sonic Promiseland."
Mainstream Success
Cody became more widely known in 2002. A famous hip hop group called The Roots remade one of his songs. The song was "The Seed" from his album. They renamed it "The Seed (2.0)" for their album Phrenology.
Cody played guitar and sang on "The Seed (2.0)". He also appeared in its music video. The video was played a lot on TV channels like MTV and BET. At this time, Cody's band included drummer Craig Waters and bassist Aaron Ebensperger. In 2003, Cody Chesnutt was nominated for the Shortlist Music Prize. He performed at the award ceremony in Los Angeles.
Later Works
In 2006, Cody was in a music documentary film. It was called Dave Chappelle's Block Party. He also recorded a song called "Boils" for an album that year.
Cody released an EP (a shorter album) in 2010. It was titled Black Skin No Value. He later announced that his next big album would be released in 2012. This album was called Landing On A Hundred.
In 2012, Cody Chesnutt performed live on a TV show. It was the BBC's Later... with Jools Holland. He sang three songs: "Til I Met Thee," "Under the Spell of the Handout," and "That's Still Mama."
In 2020, Cody wrote and performed a new song for a Pixar movie. The movie was Soul. His song was called "Parting Ways."
