One Market Plaza is a group of three office buildings in San Francisco, California. It is located at 1 Market Street near the San Francisco Embarcadero waterfront.
The complex includes an old 11-story building called the Southern Pacific Building, also known as "The Landmark." This building was finished in 1916. In 1976, it became part of the larger One Market Plaza development.
The plaza also features two taller buildings built in 1976. The Spear Tower has 43 stories and is 172 meters (about 564 feet) tall. The Steuart Tower has 27 stories and is 111 meters (about 364 feet) tall.
The entire complex was updated in 1996 by the architect firm César Pelli & Associates. Another big renovation started in 2014 and was completed in 2016.
The Southern Pacific Building
The Southern Pacific Building is the oldest part of One Market Plaza. It is sometimes called "The Landmark" because of its history.
After the Southern Pacific company joined with Union Pacific, the Landmark building was sold in 1997. It was bought for $50 million. Before this, there was a plan to turn the building into a hotel, but it did not happen.
A large renovation costing $88 million added modern features to the building. This included things like air conditioning and hot water. For ten years, the Del Monte Foods company had its main offices on the top three floors of this building.
