Onyar facts for kids

The Onyar River is a river in Girona, Catalonia, a region in Spain. It starts high up in the Guilleries mountains, where two mountain ranges meet: the Catalan Transversal Range and the Pre-Coastal Range.
The Onyar flows into the Ter right in the city of Girona. It travels through the city from south to north, dividing it into two main parts: the older section on the right side and the newer, more modern part on the left.
As the Onyar makes its way through Girona, it is joined by water from the Monar or Conda channel. This channel actually gets its water from the Ter River and used to help water the farms in an area called "Mercadal." Further north, the Onyar meets two other rivers, the Güell and the Galligans, close to the railway tracks. Finally, it flows completely into the Ter River near the Pedret neighborhood.
The Onyar and Floods
The Onyar and Güell rivers have caused big floods in Girona many times over the years. These floods have had a major impact on the city. For example, between 1970 and 1985, there were very damaging floods. These events caused a lot of harm to buildings and property. More than 75% of the city was affected, and about 2,000 shops and factories were disrupted. Around 500 cars were also damaged or destroyed.
The Famous Onyar Houses
The river flows past a beautiful and well-known tourist spot called the Onyar's houses, or "Casas del Onyar" in Catalan. These are a group of colorful homes that stand right along the riverbank. They are so famous that they often appear on postcards and in travel guides about Girona.
What Flows Into the Onyar?
Smaller streams and rivers that flow into a larger river are called tributaries. The Onyar River has a few of these:
