The Catalan Pre-Coastal Range (called Serralada Prelitoral Catalana in Catalan) is a chain of mountains in Catalonia, a region in Spain. These mountains run right next to the Mediterranean Sea coast. They are part of a larger group of mountains known as the Catalan Mediterranean System.

This mountain range stretches from the Catalan Transversal Range in the north all the way to the Serra de l'Espina in the south. The Serra de l'Espina then connects to the Ports de Tortosa-Beseit, which is part of the Iberian System. The highest point in the Catalan Pre-Coastal Range is 1,706.7 meters high. This peak is found in the Montseny Massif.

What Mountains Make Up the Catalan Pre-Coastal Range?

Many different mountain ranges are part of the Catalan Pre-Coastal Range. Here are some of the main ones, listed from north to south:

  • Les Guilleries
  • Montseny Massif
  • Sant Llorenç de Munt
  • Montserrat
  • Serra de Queralt, Bellprat
  • Picorandan
  • Serra de Prades
  • Montsant
  • Serra de Llaberia
  • Tivissa-Vandellòs Mountains: These mountains are located closer to the coast in the south. They include smaller ranges like los Dedalts, Moles del Taix, and Serra de la Mar. Even though they are right by the sea, they are considered part of the Pre-Coastal Range because their rocks and land connect directly to it.
  • Massís de Cardó
  • Serra de la Vall de la Torre
  • Serra de Cavalls
  • Serra de Pàndols
  • Serra del Montsià: This is a mountain range made of limestone. It is located right by the coast, south of the Ebre river.

Nature and Protected Areas

The Catalan Pre-Coastal Range is home to many beautiful natural areas. Several parts of these mountains are protected to keep their nature safe. These protected areas are:

  • Parc Natural del Montseny
  • Parc Natural de Sant Llorenç del Munt i l'Obac
  • Parc Natural de Montserrat
  • Parc Natural dels Ports de Tortosa-Beseit
  • Parc Natural de la Serra de Montsant

These parks help protect the plants, animals, and landscapes for everyone to enjoy.
