Catalan Coastal Range facts for kids
The Catalan Coastal Range (called Serralada Litoral Catalana in Catalan) is a system of mountain chains. These mountains run right next to the Mediterranean Sea coast in Catalonia, Spain. It is part of a larger group of mountains called the Catalan Mediterranean System. The main part of this range stretches between the Foix River and the Roses Gulf. The mountains here are usually around 500 meters (about 1,640 feet) high. The very highest point is at a place called Montnegre, which is 763 meters (about 2,503 feet) tall.
Exploring the Mountain Ranges
The Catalan Coastal Range is made up of several smaller mountain chains. These chains are listed from north to south:
- Montgrí
- Gavarres
- Massís de l'Ardenya
- Serra de Marina
- Montnegre Massif
- Serra del Corredor
- Serra de Sant Mateu
- Serra de la Conreria
- Serra de Collserola
- Massís del Garraf
Further south, there are some other coastal mountains. These include los Dedalts, Moles del Taix, and Serra de la Mar. They are found in the Tivissa-Vandellòs Mountains. Also, the Serra del Montsià is another one. Even though these are close to the sea, they are usually grouped with the Catalan Pre-Coastal Range. This is because their rocks and land connect with that range.
Nature and Environment
The Catalan Coastal Range is home to some important natural areas. These places are protected to keep their plants and animals safe. Some of these protected areas include:
- Parc Natural del Montnegre i el Corredor
- Parc de Collserola
- Parc Natural del Garraf
However, some parts of the range have faced problems. The land has been damaged in several areas. This is mainly due to things like stone quarrying (digging for rocks). Also, there are rubbish dumps and urban sprawl (when cities and towns spread out). These activities can harm the natural environment.
