About the Montsant Mountains
These mountains are part of a larger group called the Catalan Pre-Coastal Range. The highest point in the Serra de Montsant is Roca Corbatera, which stands tall at 1,163 meters (about 3,816 feet). Other important peaks include Piló dels Senyalets (1,109 m) and la Cogulla (1,063 m).
The name Serra de Montsant means 'Holy Mountain Range'. It got this name a long time ago, in the early Middle Ages. Many hermits, who were people living alone for religious reasons, used to live in these mountains.
Today, the Montsant mountain range is a protected area. It is known as the Serra de Montsant Natural Park. This means the area is kept safe to protect its nature and wildlife.
Famous for Wine
This mountain region is very famous for making red wine. Some of the best vineyards (places where grapes are grown) are found here. Many of these vineyards are close to the Cartoixa d'Escaladei. This is an old monastery that belonged to the Carthusian Order. The mountains even give their name to the Montsant wine-producing area, which is a special region known for its quality wines.
