The 1,515 meter high Puigsacalm is part of the Catalan Transversal Range.

The Catalan Transversal Range (Serralada Transversal in Catalan) is a group of smaller mountain ranges. They are found at the eastern end of the Pre-Pyrenees mountains. These ranges are located between the Osona and Garrotxa areas of Catalonia.

In the past, these mountains made it difficult to travel across northern Catalonia. It was especially hard to go between northeastern Catalonia (with cities like Girona) and western Catalonia (with cities like Lleida). This problem has been partly solved today. A major road called the Eix Transversal now helps people travel through this area.

What is the Catalan Transversal Range?

The Catalan Transversal Range is made up of several mountains. They stretch from the northwest to the southeast. These mountains are located between the Pyrenees, the Sub-Pyrenees, and the Catalan Pre-Coastal Range. They also touch the northern part of the Catalan Coastal Depression.

The highest point in this range is a mountain called Puigsacalm. It stands tall at 1,515 meters (about 4,970 feet).

Volcanic Area

One very special part of the Catalan Transversal Range is near Olot, in the Garrotxa region. This small area has a volcanic origin. You can find extinct volcanoes here. Some famous ones are the cone-shaped Santa Margarida and Croscat.

You can also see large masses of basalt rock. These rocks were formed from ancient lava flows. A great example is at Castellfollit de la Roca, where basalt cliffs rise dramatically.

Main Mountains in the Range

Here are some of the most important mountains in the Catalan Transversal Range:

  • Puigsacalm (1,515 meters)
  • Pla d'Aiats (1,306 meters)
  • El Far (1,111 meters)
  • Finestres (1,027 meters)
  • Sant Roc (591 meters)
