The Opal Tower, officially called Opal 3, is a very tall building in Leeds, England. It has 25 floors! This building is a home for over 500 students. It's super close to two big universities: Leeds Beckett University and the University of Leeds.
Building the Opal Tower
Before the Opal Tower was built, a pub called The Londoner stood on this spot. In July 2005, plans were first made to build a 23-floor student apartment block here.
After some changes, permission was given in December 2006 to build the 25-floor tower we see today. Construction started in early 2007. The goal was to finish the building by September 2008.
The building was designed by a company called Morrison Design. Opal Property Group developed the project. The main company that built it was Ocon Construction. The building was finished right on time! Students started moving in between September 15th and 20th, 2008.
At the time it was finished, Opal 3 was the third tallest building in Leeds. Only Bridgewater Place and The Plaza Tower were taller. The Plaza Tower actually became taller than Opal 3 about a year after Opal 3 was completed.
Living at Opal Tower
Opal 3 offers different types of rooms for students. Most students live in "cluster flats." These are like apartments shared by up to six students. Each student gets their own bedroom with a private bathroom, called an "en-suite."
There are also "deluxe rooms" which are a bit bigger and have a double bed. On the higher floors, you can find a few "studio flats." These are smaller apartments where one student has their own bedroom, living area, and kitchen all in one space.
