Opel Insignia

The Opel Insignia is a popular car made by the German company Opel. It has been around since 2008. This car comes in a few different styles, like a hatchback, a saloon (which is a regular sedan), or an estate (a station wagon).

You might know the Insignia by other names depending on where you live. In the United Kingdom, it's sold as a Vauxhall. In North America, it's known as the Buick Regal. It was even sold in Australia as the Holden Commodore for a while!

Generations of the Opel Insignia

The Opel Insignia has had a few updates since it first came out.

First Generation (2008-2017)

The first version of the Insignia was launched in 2008. It was quite a big deal because it was meant to be the next Saturn Aura car in America. However, the company that made Saturn cars, GM, decided to stop making them. So, the Insignia design was instead given to Buick, becoming the fifth version of the Buick Regal.

In 2013, the first generation Insignia got a refresh. This means it had some design changes to make it look more modern. The updated Buick Regal came out in 2014.

Second Generation (2017-Present)

A brand new version of the Insignia went on sale in mid-2017. This second generation also brought a new Buick Regal to North America.

Interestingly, this new Insignia also became the Holden Commodore in Australia starting in early 2018. This happened after car production stopped in Australia in October 2017.

Different Names for the Insignia

The Opel Insignia is a great example of how one car can be sold under different brand names around the world.

  • Opel Insignia: This is its main name in most of Europe.
  • Vauxhall Insignia: This is what it's called in the United Kingdom. Vauxhall is a British car brand that is part of the same company as Opel.
  • Buick Regal: In the United States and Canada, this car is sold as the Buick Regal. It's usually available as a sedan.
  • Holden Commodore: In Australia and New Zealand, the second generation Insignia was sold as the Holden Commodore.
