History of Opheim
Opheim was named after Alfred Sumner Opheim and his wife Helen. They were the town's first postmasters.
The town was founded before the Great Northern Railway expanded. Even so, Opheim had its own train station. However, the railway line between Opheim and Scobey was removed in the early 1990s.
Opheim was once home to the Opheim Air Force Station. This was a radar station used by the United States Air Force. After it closed in 1979, the town's population became much smaller.
In the past, Opheim had many banks, bars, stores, and even a movie theater. Most of these businesses have now closed or changed owners. The town currently faces a slow economic decline. This means it has fewer ways to make money.
A company called Granrud's Lefse started in Opheim in 1977. It was founded by Evan and Myrt Granrud in their garage. They made traditional Norwegian potato flatbread called Lefse. The company was sold in 2018 and moved to Scobey, Montana.
Opheim has a strong Norwegian-American heritage. You can see this in the high school's mascot, which is the Vikings! In 2008, Opheim High School was in the news because only one student graduated that year.
In 2011, Opheim celebrated its 100th anniversary. This big event happened over the 4th of July weekend. Hundreds of people who used to live or study in Opheim came back. They celebrated the town's rich history. Opheim was once a busy town with almost 500 residents. It had many businesses that served all of northern Valley County.
